Your Guide: Getting from Estes Park to Grand Lake
So you’re looking to get from Estes Park over to Grand Lake? Awesome choice. It is one of the most spectacular drives in Colorado, maybe the whole country. But there’s a huge thing you gotta know right off the bat before you even start looking at a map. The main route, Trail Ridge Road, is only open in the summer.
The Two Routes: Summer Fun vs. Winter Trek
Summer Route (Late May - Mid October, weather depending): This is the famous one. You’ll take Trail Ridge Road (US-34) straight through Rocky Mountain National Park. This road is the highest continuous paved road in North America, cresting at over 12,000 feet!
- Distance: About 48 miles
- Average Travel Time: Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours, and thats without stopping. And trust me, you are definately gonna wanna stop for the views. Most people make a half-day trip out of it.
Winter Route (When Trail Ridge Road is closed): When the snow comes, the direct route is impossible. You have to go all the way around the national park. It’s a much, much longer drive.

- RMNP Park Pass: A 1-day pass for a private vehicle is about $30.
- Uber/Lyft: If you could even find a driver in Estes willing to go to Grand Lake, you’d be looking at a huge fare, likely $250+, and you’d have no way to get back. We don’t recommend even trying this.
- Private Car/Shuttle: This is a luxury service. You’re hiring a car and driver for several hours. Expect to pay premium rates, probably starting around $400 and going up from there.

You’ll need to rent a car from the airport to get to either Estes Park or Grand Lake.
